| The ModRing Rap | |
| Mod files began appearing on the Internet in the 1980s and the ModRing was established way back in 1996 as one of the first rings to bring mod composers and fans together to share music. The sites in ModRing are listed in the order they joined (some have been here since 96) so surfing through them is like traveling in time! If you crave free music to play with WinAmp, etc, then check out these sites. Join the ModRing if you create mod music or have a site that features mods of any kind (MOD, XM, IT, S3M, etc.), or links to mods, trackers, players, or other mod sites. Our members also do formats like MP3 and midi, but mods are required. Welcome to The ModRing - risen from the Dead! | |
| The ModRing Ringmaster | |
| That's me, FLAtRich. I
took over management of The ModRing in September, 2003. I joined the
ModRing in 1997 and "ownership" was up for grabs in 2003 so I
decided to go for it. I have a couple of smaller rings (All The News
WebRing and TV Fan Site WebRing), but ModRing has the most members.
BTW, mods aren't dead. fLAtDiSk mod sites are averaging 700 downloads per month in 2003, mostly mods, not counting the fLAtDiSk Mod Archives site, which is hosted by my Amiga friends at back2roots.org. People love free music! |

| ModRing is part of WebRing | |
| ModRing is made possible by external servers maintained by WebRing. The original WebRing was managed by Yahoo! for a while, and then it was reorganized by WebRing, Inc. They did a great job of it and it was no easy task, as WebRing now boasts some 60,000 rings linking to a million websites! The WebRing currently runs on SimpleNet's servers. SimpleNet is one of the great independent Internet Providers and very reliable. | |
| WebRing has a standard navigation system for you | |
| If you joined ModRing back in the old days like I did, you probably picked up an HTML fragment from a ringmaster to add to your site. There were several versions of the original HTML, depending on the ringmaster. The HTML fragment allowed ring surfers to find you from other ModRing sites and visa versa. When WebRing reorganized, they offered an alternative standard code system to simplify navigation between member sites. You have to join WebRing to get this code (called the SSNB code) but membership in WebRing is free. The navigation bar, as they call it, also allows you to join loads of other related rings and connect to them all on your site with a single HTML fragment. (The ModRing nav bar appears on the MODSpeak home page.) | |
| You can go to the ModRing hub page at WebRing to get the new navigation bar code for your site. | |
| Or you can update the old HTML | |
| If you still have that original ModRing HTML fragment on your site, it will probably still bring in surfers and take them to the next or previous site in the ModRing. It probably wont have the correct ModRing homepage link or ModRing graphics. You are not obligated to change anything, of course, but if you want to update the old HTML fragment without going for the WebRing SSNB code, here's how (be sure to save a copy of your page or the old fragment first as a backup!): | |
| Replace all references to "ModRing Official Site" in your code with the new correct URL - http://i.webring.com/hub?ring=modring | |
| Example - your
code reads: <A TARGET="_top" HREF="http://miso.wwa.com/~daf/modring.html">ModRing Homepage!</A> Change the address in quotes to: <A TARGET="_top" HREF="http://i.webring.com/hub?ring=modring">ModRing Homepage!</A> |
|
| Do the same with any other references to "ModRing Official Site" in the HTML fragment. Leave the other links alone. They lead to webring.org and will bounce over to the real WebRing server. | |
| Switch to the new, improved ModRing graphics! | |
| If the HTML fragment on your site features two .jpg files named mrsite.jpg and nextsite.jpg, here are new versions of those files. Right-click to download them. | |

| The new .jpg files are exactly the same dimensions and approximately the same size as the old ones. | |
| Some ModRing HTML fragments on sites in the ring use graphics other than the mrsite.jpg and nextsite.jpg, but the code on these sites is very old. If you want to catch up, I really recommend the WebRing navigation bar as the best solution. | |
