"The Shadow debuted on July 31, 1930, as the mysterious narrator of the Street and Smith
radio program Detective Story Hour developed in an effort to boost sales of Detective Story
Magazine. When listeners of the program began asking at newsstands for copies of 'that
Shadow detective magazine', Street & Smith decided to create a magazine based around The
Shadow and hired Gibson to create a character concept to fit the name and voice and write
a story featuring him. The first issue of The Shadow Magazine went on sale on April 1, 1931,

Broadcast on September 26, 1937, "Death House Rescue" was the first episode of a new radio
drama, "The Shadow", based on the character as created by Gibson for Street and Smith. It
was presented on the 2-year old Mutual Broadcasting System, sponsored by Blue Coal. "The
show would become a mainstay of the network for more than a decade and a half and one of
the most popular programs in radio history." The last broadcast was December 26, 1954.

Orson Welles played The Shadow between September 1937 and September 1938. "For the first
year of its Mutual run, Welles provided the voice of The Shadow and his newly created alter
ego, Lamont Cranston. He played the part anonymously at first. But, as one chronicler put it,
'nothing to do with Welles could remain a secret for very long.'" - Wiki

The Shadow endured many comic book, TV and film incarnations, the most recent was The Shadow
(1994), starring Alec Baldwin as Lamont Cranston.
