French critics, writing in Cahiers du Cinema, called Mr. Arkadin one of the 12 best films ever made. The New York Times said: "To less specialized observers, the film seems more like 'Citizen Kane' revisited. It is, in turn, baffling, exciting, infuriating, original and obscure. It is also, from start to finish, the work of a man with an unmistakable genius for the film medium. In other words, it is typically Orson Welles."
