On March 31, 1940, Orson Welles and The Campbell Playhouse present Jane Eyre by Charlotte Brontė. Cast: Orson Welles (Mr. Rochester), Madeleine Carroll (Jane Eyre), Cecilia Loftus (Mrs. Fairfax), Robert Coote (Mr. Brocklehurst), Serita Whooton (Young Jane), George Coulouris (the Innkeeper), Edgar Barrier (the Priest). 00:58:57 - 26.9 MB Madeleine Carroll (Jane Eyre) played Pamela in Alfred Hitchcock's The 39 Steps (1935) and opposite Bob Hope in My Favorite Blonde (1942). Welles had previously adapted Jane Eyre for The Mercury Theatre on the Air broadcast of September 18, 1938, now lost because the recording was irreparably damaged in preparations for the film version of Jane Eyre in 1943 (in which Welles repeated his role of Mr. Rochester.) Welles also played Mr. Rochester in a later Lux Radio Theater version broadcast on May 6, 1944. The 1943 film screenplay was written by John Houseman, Aldous Huxley, and Robert Stevenson. Stevenson directed. Welles was an uncredited co-producer. The musical score was composed and conducted by Bernard Herrmann, and the cinematography was by George Barnes. If the NY Times review by Bosley Crowther is evidence, the film was not an initial success. Houseman asked to have his name removed from the credits. Welles and his sponsor Campbell parted amicably after the March 31st broadcast. When The Campbell Playhouse returned to radio November 29, 1940, it was a 30-minute weekly CBS series - last broadcast June 13, 1941. - wiki A link to the original 1940 Jane Eyre radio script: https://www.genericradio.com/show/YS0MH20WK The complex creative politicking behind the film is recounted here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jane_Eyre_(1943_film)
