Orson Welles and The Campbell Playhouse present Only Angels Have Wings by Howard Hawks. Cast: Orson Welles (Geoff Carter), Joan Blondell (Bonnie Lee), Regis Toomey (the Kid), Edmond McDonald (Les Peters), Edgar Barrier (Ashton Stevens), George Coulouris (Dutchy), William Alland (Joe Souther), Richard Baer (Tex), Richard Wilson (Pete). Based on the motion picture screenplay by Jules Furthman. A year earlier, Only Angels Have Wings hit the movie houses as an American adventure drama film directed by Howard Hawks, starring Cary Grant and Jean Arthur. It is now regarded as one of Hawks best and, despite the dated story and effects (the film was nominated for an Oscar for Special Effects), still works as a believable tribute to airmail pilots of the time. The film's principal actors, Cary Grant, Jean Arthur, Rita Hayworth, Richard Barthlemess and Thomas Mitchell all reprised their roles in a Lux Radio Playhouse production in 1939. The Welles adaptation features Joan Blondell in the Jean Arthur role and Regis Toomey as "the Kid", played by Thomas Mitchell in the film.
